B.S. Detector: Phil Mickelson Edition

Beware of the ailing golfer. That is what "they say," according to Phil Mickelson. Who says that? Maybe he thinks they say that after his nemesis Tiger Woods limped his way to an allegedly glorious victory at the 2008 U.S. Open.

The night before the final 18-hole round of the the four round CA Championship, Mickelson was admitted to a hospital and treated with two IVs. He had apparently been fighting a virus for the previous three days while beating the competition. After treatment, he then went on to win the event, including beating Tiger Woods by eight shots.

I am looking at the B.S. detector. The needle is bouncing around erratically. I cannot quite get a read on this one though. This one just does not pass the sniff test.

Bull Durham Meter: Chris Paul edition

Welcome to the first edition of the Shots Heard Bull Durham Meter, which is not to be confused with the Shots Heard B.S. Detector. Those familiar with the 'Bull Durham' movie, know that the Bull Durham concept is to have sports idioms handy for every question. In this way, a player can look noble, while only shaving off a part of their limelight, which in turn creates more limelight over the long run and conversely more bucks.

The catch about Bull Durham phrases, is a player can actually mean the statements in theory and really be that noble. But, about every athlete learns the ways of the Bull Durham. Thus, a player can that uses Bull Durham phrases are usually set off the Shots Heard B.S. Detector. But to minimize the detector's use, we will just use the meter and let the reader decide.

The first edition of the Shots Heard Bull Durham Meter, comes compliments of Chris Paul. In two games this year, Paul came just three steals short of the quadruple-double. When asked about almost being the first NBA player to accomplish the feat in 15 years, Paul broke out his book of Durhamisms.

"I knew I was close to it, but at the same time it didn't take me away from the game. The important thing is that we won the two games I was close in," Paul said.

In the history of NBA statistics, four players have recorded a quadruple-double. They are Nate Thurmond, Alvin Robertson, Hakeem Olajuwon and David Robinson. The Admiral (Robinson) was the last to accomplish the feat on February 17, 1994.

Those that follow the ways of the Bull Durham are more inclined to get endorsement deals. Look for Chris Paul on the next Right Guard deodorant commercial.

Shaq calls Chris Bosh, the 'RuPaul of big men'

If you are a soldier, never go into war without your helmet. If you are an NBA player, never take verbal shots at Shaquille O'Neal. Shaq always dishes back a hot shot. The shot is usually so damaging that it effectively erases his counterpart's argument.

For better or worse, Chris Bosh is the latest recipient of a thunderous verbal Shaq attack. After scoring 45 pts on 20-25 shooting, Chris Bosh complained that Shaq was allowed to camp in the lane.

"I heard what Chris Bosh said, and that's strong words coming from the RuPaul of big men," O'Neal said. "I'm going to do the same thing (in their next meeting) I did before - make him quit. Make 'em quit and complain. It's what I do."

Ouch! Shaq downplayed Bosh's concerns, comparing him to a tall, skinny, feminine acting male. In the world of NBA smack, Shaq has taken care of business once again.
