Former Reds forward backs dependable defender
Manchester United striker Michael Owen has backed his former Liverpool team-mate Jamie Carragher to shine at the 2010 World Cup, should he choose to come out of international retirement.
Reports have surfaced suggesting England manager Fabio Capello has made a plea to the defender to make himself available for selection for the tournament in South Africa as Rio Ferdinand struggles with injury.
Carragher - who quit the national side in unceremonious circumstances - is yet to comment, but Owen believes England can rely on the experienced centre back.
“Jamie has been there and done it for club and country,” he said, according to the Liverpool Echo.
“Whether he goes or not, he would be one of the last people you would worry about depending on.”
Owen also expects England to make the final eight of the competition at the very least.
He added: “We have a very good side and we are going there in good form.
