Rafael Nadal may respect Roger Federer, but that was not going to stop him from subtly gloating about his dominance over him in the 2008 French Open Final. Nadal thumped an angry Federer 6-1, 6-3 and 6-0, including winning the last 9 games.
"I'm very sorry for him," Nadal said. The statement is reminiscient of Jean Girard's smugness toward Ricky Bobby in the movie, 'Talladega Nights.' Like the movie, the a European, Nadal, has swooped in and stole the American, Federer's thunder. In that movie, Girard and Bobby also shared a love-hate relationship.
The Spaniard, Nadal, is now 28-0 at Rolland-Garros. He is also the first to win four in a row at the French Open since Bjorn Borg did it (1978-1981). Borg owns the French Open record of 6 titles.
Nadal is also great on clay. He won a record 81 matches on clay (April 05' - May 07'), before losing his only one in ten clay matches against Federer in the Hamburg Open Final.
Clay or no clay, Nadal is a great showman. He bites every trophy he wins. His apology is just a snide way of telling Federer that he got owned! The ball is now in Federer's court, so to speak. Nadal is gloating about being faster. Will Federer be a scared baby chipmunk (See videos)?
