England Soccer Team profile - Soccer worldcup A Perspective
England's isolated Soccer Worldcup glory was a home win in 1966. However this glory is now a vague memory as the squad failed to maintain their trophy as anticipated, in 1970. Their non-qualification of three world soccer qualifying tournaments, has paid it's price on the team's overall success.
But, after a suite of modest performance under Sven-Goran Eriksson and Steve McClaren, there seems to be a refreshing boost of energy in the team thanks to coach Fabio Capello. With a new glimmer of faith for the Three Lions' squad, the team needs to restore their stature. With their recent display of confidence and the fact that the weather conditions throughout the South Africa Worldcup 2010 will be in their favor, England undoubtedly have a possibility of at least receiving a semi-final position.
The Main Soccer Worldcup Players
Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has displayed immense commitment and is the best goal scorer having scored 9 goals in 9 matches. Supporting goal scorers are midfielders Steven Gerrard (3) and Frank Lampard (4). Front-man Peter Crouch is not to be left out with his four strikes in as many games and Tottenham's Jermain Defoe showing his skill with 3 goals in only 135 minutes of play. John Terry and Frank Lampard (10) have had the most Soccer Worldcup appearances of the Three Lions' soccer team.
England's Leadership
Fabio Capello was born on June 18, 1946 in San Canzian d'Isonzo, Italy and has won several honors including multiple Serie A and La Liga titles. As a player for Italy, Capello's finest match was ironically in 1973 against England at Wembley. Recognized for his stickler style, Capello has had a massive influence on the England soccer team and has reshaped them from a situation of desolation to one of aspiration as they go into the South Africa Worldcup 2010 as true candidates.
England FIFA Soccer Worldcup Accomplishments
- England's admission to Soccer Worldcup was in 1950 in Brazil and since then they have performed in 11 global showpieces. Their one and only glory was on home ground in 1966.
- On October 8, 2005, England began a succession of ten sequential victories in FIFA World Soccer qualifiers. However this came to an sudden end on October 10, 2009 when they were over-powered 1-0 by Ukraine.
